While a material’s past can be revealed, its future must be speculated upon, designed for, and enacted. Our research studio will explore both the hidden past and potential future of materials as an impetus for design inquiry. Our goal is to investigate current applications of materials, expose and communicate their history, and to design proposals for their alternative futures. We will examine materials from human and non-human viewpoints. We will question the implication of future technologies, environmental changes, and cultural developments that may deplete some materials and create surpluses of others. We will design for material futures that understand a material’s past.
